About the Band

Super hot Salsa and Latin Jazz will fill the room as Grupo Aye, the brainchild of Interlochen trained percussionist Robert Mulligan, takes the stage with Cuban born lead singer Oscar Gonzalez. This ten-piece band made up of seasoned Latin and jazz performers, includes Keaton Akins, trumpet; Mike Sailors, trumpet; Oscar Gonzalez, lead vocal; Matt Heredia, bass; Tom Lockwood, sax and flute; Rob Mulligan, congas and vocals; Carl Poposky, trombone; James Rodriguez, timbales: Carlos Cruz, bongo and vocals; and Steve Talaga, piano. In 2004 Taras and Wendy Denysenko of Rochester, NY won 1st place in the Arthur Murray Rising Star Superama Rhythm division in Miami.  Since then they achieved numerous awards in such competitions as the Caribbean Danceport Championship, the New York City Superama and Dance-o-rama, Atlanta Open, Atlantic City Dance-O-Rama and Las Vegas World-o-rama.

Taras wanted to become a professional dancer and musician since the age of five when he began dancing with the “Yevshan” Ukrainian Folk Dance ensemble in Rochester, NY and playing such instruments as the saxophone, clarinet, accordion and finally guitar.  He joined the Rochester Arthur Murray Dance Studios as a teacher in 1995 and was a top teacher for 8 years.  He began competing in 1996 in the rhythm division and in 1998 changed to smooth (fox trot, waltz, tango and Viennese waltz). That year he was the Arthur Murray Smooth Champion for the East Coast Region. In 2000, he became part owner and dance director for the Rochester studio. Don’t miss his high-energy coaching!

Background: Bob Powers and Julia Gorchakova are the 14 time undefeated US Rhythm Champions as well as 3 time World Mambo Champions. In 1998 they were finalist in the World Showdance Championships in Holland. They are members of the Arthur Murray International Dance Board. Bob is currently a traveling coach, consultant and ballroom adjudicator. They are co-owners and developers of Core Rhythms, www.corerhythms.com, an aerobic Latin dance fitness program sold throughout the world. Core Rhythms has become one the top selling video fitness programs in the US and has achieved great success throughout Europe and Asia. The company is now expanding into licensing, making it available to anyone wishing to certify as a Core Rhythms Instructor.

Bob and Julia spend most of their time in Scottsdale, AZ where Bob teaches and works on  developing the Core Rhythms programs and running the company. Julia and her mother Natalia have combined to open a ballroom dance costume company, Artistry in Motion. With Julia’s original designs and Natalia’s eye for detail the company has become a huge success.

They are members of the board of the World Dance Arts Foundatio http://worlddancearts.org/, an organization founded by Andrew and Anna Smart. The WDAF is an organization designed to promote and provide ballroom dancing to children throughout the world. They currently provide instruction to over 4,000 children enrolled in the program as well as donate hundreds of thousands of dollars to children’s dance organizations.

Bob and Julia co-organize the Sunburst Ball http://worldpromotionsinc.com/sbb.htm, along with World Promotions Inc. one of the largest competition organizers in the United States. The Sunburst is a dance competition held yearly in Scottsdale, AZ during the second weekend of December. The Sunburst offers free entries to children.

Join Arthur Murray studios at our 29th Street location in Grand Rapids for Cinco de Mayo festivities on May 5th at 6 p.m. to 6:45. Learn sizzling Latin moves and enjoy virgin margaritas on the house.
